“What is your endgame here, young man?”
    Peter shrugs. “Slumber party.”
“Do your parents know you’re here?”
Peter grins and slouches in his seat. “Definitely.”
“What makes you think Mr. Stark wants to see you?”
The words make him feel suddenly hollow, when he had been doing such a good job at pretending none of this really matters. He can feel his grin waver but strains to keep it in place. “He wants to see me. He is— He wants to see me. He knows me.”
    -
Or: Fourteen-year-old Peter took the gamble and traveled from his hometown Malibu to New York city for a ‘slumber party’ that, if it were up to him, will extend to approximately twenty thousand nights. He hasn’t seen Tony in five years, and going back home is not an option. But everything will be all right. Why wouldn’t it be?

    “How old are you?”
“What do you care?” is the hostile reply.
“Because I don’t remember agreeing to hire kids on the cleaning team.”
Peter Parker takes another bite of his sandwich and says, around a full mouth: “I’m just here for my community sentence.”
    “Huh,” Tony says. “Why?”
“I spray painted ‘superheroes should go fuck themselves’ on the side of this building. Got caught.”
“Better luck next time, then. Were you in my lab yesterday?”
“I was in several labs,” says the kid dismissively.
“Did you mess with my calculations?”
“I corrected them, if that’s what you mean. Today is my last day, and the thought of leaving them up like that, half-assed, gave me angina. So, yeah, sue me.”

After failing to save someone from a fire, Spider-Man hung up his suit. Now, three months later, a grumpy teen named Peter Parker stumbles into the Avengers’ lives.

    Summary

“Tony fucking Stark,” Clint says, and he points at the black smoke. “Did you blow up that base, you piece of shit?”
“Absolutely not. I almost got blown up with it.”
Clint is not alone. A few yards behind him, a scrawny figure halts and squints at Tony from underneath a frayed baseball cap. Sunken eyes. Dressed in a black undershirt and cargo pants.
    Can’t be older than eighteen.
    “What are you doing here?”
Clint jerks his head at the boy behind him. “SHIELD mission. Extracting a hostage.”
Tony glances back at the teenager, whose face has now morphed into something entirely impassive. “He seems thrilled about his rescue.”

Tony is roped into a mission to transport a teenager to safety. But when things go south, it soon becomes more and more puzzling who the teenager is and what ‘safety’ means for him.

    Summary

    Look.
Losing someone close to you is rough. Grief is a strange thing, it affects appetite, sleep patterns, mood. May had reassured Peter many times that he was not crazy for feeling crazy. That he simply needed to give himself time.
He also read about the process of grief in a pamphlet Happy gave him.
So, when he gets back from the funeral at the lake house and walks into his bedroom to find Mr. Stark lying on the rug, ankles crossed, twirling his thumbs, and generally looking extremely alive…
    …well…
…clearly this is what the pamphlet meant with ‘denial’ being the first stage of grief.
