    “Reckless?” Past Anaxa laughed again. “Says the man who’s standing here anyway.”

    Present Anaxa ignored him. He looked at Aglaea and something in his posture shifted, the faintest softening at the edges.

    “I did not come here to… confess anything,” he said quietly. “I came because the thread pulled. And because—” He stopped and swallowed once. “Because wherever you are, some part of me has always answered.”

    Aglaea let the golden strand slip slowly between her fingers. It pulsed once, warm against her skin.

    “Then perhaps it wanted honesty,” she said.

    “Don’t think so highly of yourself, Deliverer.” Mydei hummed, a challenging glint in his eyes. “You’re not that hard to read either, you know.”

A fool’s decision, to be sure—and yet he is still here, checking on him. That lingering smile on the man’s face as the mermaid left him there on shore is still etched into his mind, even now, days later.

    Perhaps Mydei is the true fool between them.
