"'Cos I can," came the flippant reply.
Soda sent him a dark look and kept going through the photos, speeding up slightly until:
"Pony, why the hell are you holding Darry over a cliff?"Ponyboy and Darry end up bonding over a new athletic hobby, one that Soda is not too keen on.

Summary
If I really think about it, it's Soda who pulled them all in in the first place. Not to say they didn't stay cause they ended up liking Pony and me, but Sodapop was the one who jerked everybody's strings together. He's always just been like that.
Or, Darry reflects throughout the years on the first time he met the guys, and the first time he thought of them as brothers, all while grossly underestimating his own role in it.
