More time passed, cars driving past the bus stop, but none stopping to pick him up. By now it was pouring rain, and the shitty little shelter wasn't doing much to protect him. He was cold and wet and shivering, even with his hoodie and the second identical one his parents had sent over the summer.
"Th-his is fuck-king bullsh-shit." They couldn't even be half-assed to bring him home from camp. They really didn't fucking care about him. He pulled out his phone, thumb hovering over Gwen's saved number in David's contacts. She wasn't part of the camp anymore, would she even care? But he couldn't get a hold of David, he had stolen his phone. Finally, he hit call and put the phone up to his ear.
Gwen jumped, almost falling out of bed. She quickly answered with a groan, "David, I'm going to bed, what do you want?"
"...hi, Gwen."
“Max? What are you doing with- did you keep David’s phone?”
Fuck. He hated this. "...my p-parents aren't p-picking me up."
"...What?"

"Fffuuuuuuuck," Max groaned. This was what agreeing to play the stupid game with Neil got him. "I already told you I didn't want to play your lame-ass fucking game!"
"Well I didn't do this!" Nerris argued. "And it is not lame!"
"I think Harrison did it," Preston said, clapping as he did so.
Neil groaned. "This is his fucking magic, isn't it?"
Nerris squealed again. "Ohmigosh that's amazing! His magic can do this?!"
Nerris looked around to try and find him. Max stood up, mentally telling himself about everything he hated here. His feet, his clothes, his height, Nerris being too excited, damn Harrison still fucking sleeping.
"Well, I don't see anything else around here that could explain it," Preston shot back, still smug for figuring it out.

Max rolled his eyes a little, sitting back on the full camp bed that had been put into the counselor's cabin back when David and Gwen got together and married. Now, with Max as a camp counselor and Neil around to do a research paper on the local supernatural phenomena, it was their bed to share. Not that they would get much privacy anyway with Nikki in her own bed across the room... but whatever. They were all adults, they could kick her out for a couple hours if need be.
"I'm only here 'cause I'm between jobs," Max reminded David. "Don't expect me to be here every summer."

She got up to grab it from her room, and she returned a minute later, handing it to David with the charging wire. David plugged it in, took a breath, and opened it up to get started. Gwen reclined on the couch again, clicking through her programs before settling on some old episodes of Rob Boss.
David smiled. The relaxing voice of Rob Boss was helpful at the moment, easing his anxiety a bit as he searched through what he needed to do and got started on the online class he needed to take. Within about half an episode, Gwen was falling asleep against his side.

David was already expecting, or maybe hoping, something would happen with Max and his parents today. He was expecting- hoping- Max's parents would show themselves to be unsafe to hand their kid off to, and he would have an easy excuse to keep Max under his care. He even had his police friend's number ready, just in case. If not, he would maybe have to try a more underhanded way to make them less willing to take the kid home- Gwen or Campbell would know how, and Gwen wanted Max safe just as much as David did. And he deserved so much better than whatever he was getting from his parents.
What David was not ready for was Harrison's parents to be the first ones to be the problem.
