Summary
The toys were not supposed to play favorites, though it was inevitable that there would be those they got along with more than others. They just had to be subtle about it.
It was no secret that the Playcare’s CatNap had a favorite. A quiet, docile child, with absolutely no special attributes except their ability to sneak up on people. A child known known among the toys, staff, and other kids as the purple critter’s best-friend.
But then came the day you were chosen by a family and had to leave. They didn’t even give you time to say goodbye to everyone, much less your friend. All you could do was leave with a promise to a certain feline that you’d be back one day.
And now, eight years after the incident, ten since you left, you return only to find so few of your friends still remain.

She knows what the toys went through and she was determined on saving them instead of letting them suffer the events she went through against them.

Joel rolled his eyes but wiped his hands on a kitchen towel before accepting her and dotting kisses all over her face. Her cheeks were sticky from the banana she’d already eaten, “Happy birthday, baby girl.”

It only took one little girl with a messy ponytail, ratty-ass Converse sneakers, shitty puns, and a generally annoying personality to get his ass out of the grave he’d buried himself in all those years ago in Texas. One girl who was unwilling to give him up even after he told her ‘she wasn’t his daughter and he sure as hell wasn’t her dad’, failed her by getting stabbed and leaving her to fend for herself, shoved her away when she was trying to save his sorry carcass.
All it took was for her small, shaking, blood covered fingers to curl into his own for Joel to finally see that this girl owned him now. That she had carved his broken heart out of his chest, put all the pieces back together with spit and pure stubbornness, and now carried it around in her delicate, precious, grasping hands. There was no going back for Joel now.

“When I was in kindergarten, my school had a Mother's Day breakfast, and I cried because I didn’t have a mom to bring. Dad offered to go, but I wouldn’t have it. He was my Daddy; he already had a Father's Day. So, Tommy said something like, ‘Why don’t I go darlin’? I may not be your mommy, but I am your Tommy,’ and it just kinda continued from there.” Sarah’s voice softens with nostalgia. “He was always there for me, anytime Dad couldn’t be and sometimes even when he could be but I didn’t want him to be. It started as a joke, but now it feels right. Tommy Day is a day to honor the other person who’s been there for me, always.”
IE: Sarah and Tommy celebrate Tommy Day, and Ellie gets Tess a Mother's Day gift and gets all in her head about it.

“I think these are the ones,” she calls, and Joel’s head pops up from behind a shelf. He looks so much like one of those groundhogs he’d pointed out to her a couple of days back that Ellie can’t help laughing.
“What the hell’s wrong with you?” he asks, brow furrowed as she walks over to her.
“Nothing, it’s just you looked like one of those groundpigs from the other day,” Ellie smirks when Joel rolls his eyes and drops the basket on the floor, motioning for her to sit down so he can look at her boots.
“It’s a groundhog, kid. Now wiggle your toes for me,” Joel presses his thumb to the front of her boot and she wiggles her toes as requested. “That’s good. Got a little room to grow but not so much that you're gonna start chaffin’. How they feel to you?” His hands keep fiddling with the laces of the boots as she stares down at him. How the hell does he know all this stuff?
IE: Ellie and Joel make a stop to get some winter gear before making their way into Wyoming; Ellie learns some things about the past and about where she and Joel stand.
