When the going gets tough, sometimes all you can do is suck it up and plow on. Caz McLeary knew this well, as did his wife, Suze.
And that saying comes into play in bad ways, often. Like when Caz suddenly starts acting… off. Or when Suze is told that he’s dying, inside his head, tortured by everything that makes the good sides of him look outright angelic.
The miracle of the rainbow is that it really does bring out all the colors - even the dark ones. And in this case, it also brings out all of the bad memories, all of the trauma that was created in the middle of the North Sea, all those years ago.
If only Caz had a therapist whose care for his patients and friends outweigh his care for his own safety, and a loyal wife willing to go through hell and rising oil to keep him safe - and sane.

The good doctor is going to take out another and another and another until they have a cure: vivisecting Ellie through millimeters of gray matter. Ellie will be unconscious the whole time. Marlene assures him it will be completely painless as they turn his smart vibrant girl into a vegetable.
Joel disagrees. Vehemently.
Ellie's life is saved but she can't communicate or move the same ways. Now both Joel and Ellie work to do more than just endure and survive.

He and Joel swerved sideways to avoid another clutch and he saw two hit one another so hard that teeth shattered from gums. There was no making a brave stand. There was only the breath searing their lungs as they sprinted faster, faster, putting on speed they didn’t even know they had. His calves burned. His boots pelted the pavement. Tommy stopped looking back. To look back was to die.

“He’s very lucky to have you,” Gil says, and that’s that, but his words stick with Ellie long after he’s gone, after the nursing staff has turned them out for the night. Ellie follows Maria and Tommy home and thinks over and over again how luck has nothing to do with it; luck is so scarce in this world, rarer even than love. She remembers the time she found a baby bird back in Boston, holding its fragile body in her palms after rescuing it from the dormitory roof. It was a tiny thing, delicate, all hollow bones and downy brown feathers. The realization that the fragile life in her hands could be so easily crushed had been almost overwhelming.
Joel holds onto her a little like she had that bird: careful, cautious. Like she’s broken a wing and he’ll keep her safe until she’s ready to fly on her own again.
