“I - lost,” Lando chokes around the lump in his throat, but the tears still refuse to come. “I lost the championship.”
“I know,” Oscar says quietly. His hand rubs Lando comfortingly. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s just, like-,” Lando says, “-like, I knew I wasn’t going to win. And I think I’ve known that since the beginning.”
“Sure,” Oscar says softly through the darkness. “There was a big points deficit from the beginning of the year.”
“Yeah,” Lando says, voice wobbly. “But I keep thinking - like, little mistakes I made throughout the year - I keep thinking that if I hadn’t tried to fight Max so hard in Austria, or if I’d pushed harder in Brazil, or if I’d adapted to the car quicker at the start of the season-,” his voice breaks, and the tears finally come. He pushes his face into Oscar’s chest and tries to breathe deeply, tries to pull himself together.Lando struggles to come to terms with his emotions after the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Oscar is there for him.
