Summary
When I was but a child in the reckoning of men and elves, my father took me with him to the beach to catch lightning bugs for the sea lanterns. I remember a single glowing bug, fluttering all alone in the glass case of a silver lantern much too big for it, and have ever felt a kinship with it.
I am no longer the sailor lighting the way for my boat on a cloudy night. I am the lightning bug trapped inside a lantern, shining alone.
…this is not my Vingilot.
Eärendil takes Vingilot into the Timeless Void on his nightly journey, like always. He is careful, like always, to steer clear of the things he knows lurk in the deep darkness of that endless place. He is not careful enough, and when he returns at dawn he finds himself on a ship from another world that resembles his own only in name.

Summary
In the peaceful days of my youth while my father still ruled, long before chieftaincy of the Dúnedain was to be mine, I was fostered after tradition in the House of Elrond, Lord of the hidden realm of Rivendell.
And until the moment I became of age I was surrounded always by Elves from all walks of life, and I learned from them their cultures and histories, and so their greatest deeds and deepest tragedies.

The rangers of Ithilien called him the Shade of Ephel Dúath.
The folks of Minas Tirith remained unaware of him, yet the rangers who walked Ithilien knew better: it was the Shade of Ephel Dúath who shielded them and all they held dear beyond the river Anduin from the touch of Sauron.

Summary
In the wake of the grief of losing her lover whom she will never see again even in death, her friend who has been with her since childhood and her home—for she is a stranger now in the halls where she was once kin—Tauriel leaves the Elvenking's Halls in a numb daze, letting her feet take her where they will.
And where they take her is not a place anywhere in Middle-earth, but a mysterious land in-between worlds occupied by people long gone...

“The leaves were long, the grass was green, the hemlock-umbels tall and fair
And in the glade a light was seen, of stars in shadow shimmering…
Tinúviel was dancing there to music of a pipe unseen
And light of stars was in her hair, and in her raiment glimmering…”Somewhere in the faraway woods on the other side of the highway, a nightingale began to trill.
“…she lightly fled on dancing feet and left him lonely still to roam, in the silent forest listening…”

Summary
Deep in the arid desert of the southlands of Harad, long beyond the known point where the Harad Road breaks and sinks into the sands—beyond the reach of any loremasters of the Elves of the west or the Men of Gondor, far from the Havens of Umbar near the sea—there lies a wide and vibrant oasis.
The Haradrim know better than to think it a wild place.

It is said that something eerie lies at the heart of the hidden valley of Imladris.
It is a place of refuge, they say, the Last Homely House east of the sea, well-protected and welcoming to all—and in the same breath they say that sinister things are afoot in that house, things dark and unknowable.

They had talked of marriage before.
They had talked, oh yes, but they had been new and fragile then, a bloom waiting for either the right rains to make it blossom or the right drought to make it wither. The topic of marriage had been a simple conversation starter, something to keep them awake through the night when sleep didn’t matter.
