The dark blue skin this Na’vi has is certainly not one of the reef people. He quickly glances down at the hand supporting their weight—one, two, three fingers on the sand—and heaves a sigh of relief…
…only to jerk back when the Na’vi’s head lifts and inclines in his direction.
Messy medium-sized knotless braids cascade down to their shoulder blades, partially shielding their face while a humanlike set of bunny teeth, with four distinct but blunt canines, grins up shakily at him.
Lo’ak’s breath gets stuck in his throat.
It’s been weeks since Neteyam rejoined Eywa’s care. The Sully’s are… coping. In their own ways.
Dad has closed off his emotions, chasing things to do to keep himself busy; Mum is mourning, processing things the way Eywa intended; Kiri is choosing to celebrate and ignore the sadness, knowing she cannot connect with Neteyam again while they’re with the Metkayina; Tuk has decided she’ll follow Kiri in solidarity, trailing after her and socialising with the clan.
And himself? Well, he’s decided to take flight.
…That is, until something (or rather, someone) puts a halt to his plans one day.

Summary
“I would slit my throat to see if you mourned me”
After Neteyam’s death Lo’ak falls back into self destructive habits like SH to cope with the guilt he carries and on the night Payakan is outcast and Kiri and Tsireya find him they tell his parents instead of staying silent. Jake and Neytiri then have to navigate helping their son heal instead of ignoring him in their own grief. Jake battles with the fact that his human DNA is likely the reason his son is suicidal and his guilt increases as he realises what Lo’ak is going through. Luckily through it all Tsireya remains a stable support system for Lo’ak and through the tough period they grow closer and closer.
TL:DR
In the movie we got no mention of Lo’ak’s suicide attempt so this fic focuses on the Sully family reaction, specifically Jake and Neytiri and the follow up response.+Tsireya/Lo’ak fluff

Te'san pressed his hands to her back under the spray of the waterfall and whispered quietly.
"Mawey ma Katxe." He murmured in her ear. She pressed her left shoulder into the stone of the mountain more. "Ikran is not like our quiet pa'li. Ikran is more like the pa'li te pay in your stories. You must act quick once chosen Katxe."
"How will I know he chooses me?" She hissed back at Te'san who smiled sharply at her.
"He will try to throw you off the cliff." She stared at him slack jawed then, Jake cracking up behind Te'san and the other young hunters. She turned her face to the cliff and took deep breath.
"Awesome."
"You can do it. Remember quick tsaheylu and do not die." His hands on her back gave her a push, and she was out in the open, panic filling her for a moment and a moment alone. Her fingers pulled the weighted vine from its rolled-up position on her hip as she started towards the ikran, watching them drop off the cliff or fly away before she can even get too close; and then one didn't. It chided her.
"Sran! Quickly ma Katxe!" Te'san yells from somewhere behind her.

His sisters would be completely brotherless, with no one to protect while mom and dad were away.
Tsireya, having yet to fully understand Lo’ak, would mourn a loss she wishes she could’ve prevented. If only she knew how.
His mother would cry for days, more than she already has been with the loss of her eldest.
His father… his father would feel guilt. All the guilt Eywa has to offer. He would sit in his sorrows until they consumed him completely.
But Neteyam.
He would finally join Neteyam in the spirit world, and that’s worth it in Lo’aks eyes.
Or
Lo’ak gets shunned, wrongfully blamed, and he truly believes that what happened to Neteyam really was his fault. This leads him to a dark path. A dark and sandy one, more specifically.

Neytiri and Jake are in full caring parent mode but they still haven’t really connected with Lo’ak- who is in a deep depression after his brother’s death and very confused. Angst ensues.

___When Lo’ak didn’t respond, Tsireya reached out and cupped his cheek with her hand—and he immediately leaned into her touch, nuzzling his face against her palm. His eyes raised to meet hers, and Jake’s breath hitched at the raw pain swimming in them. Jake quickly averted his gaze, the vulnerability in their shared look causing guilt to stir in his stomach at his eavesdropping. Whatever this conversation was, it was not meant for his ears—or anyone’s, other than theirs.
“You do not see the way they look at me,” Lo’ak whispered, drawing Jake’s attention back. Lo’ak’s tight features melted away as he continued, “My mom has barely spoken to me since Neteyam died, barely looked at me. And my dad—” his voice broke, and he cleared his throat as if trying to free the words lodged there. “He blames me. And he is right.”

After all, Lo’ak has to step up, has to protect his family. Because he has always been big talk, brave heart and full of good intentions. He is mistakes over mistakes and living under the shadow of someone much bigger than him. He is wanting and failing. He is trying to be better and hurting everyone around him in the process.
