Stiles was in bed, yes, but not asleep. He was wide awake and slowly running a hand down the back of the person curled up in his arms. His cheek was resting lightly on the back of the person’s head, his face set in a sad frown.
As soon as the Sheriff identified the other person as Derek Hale, all the other pieces fell into place in his head and he felt a pang of sympathy for the young man. The way his body was curled into his son’s, his head buried in Stiles’ chest, his visible hand grasping Stiles’ shirt in a white-knuckled grip, all spoke of someone in the throes of grief, deeply in need of the comfort of another person. The Sheriff knew that anniversaries were often the hardest days to get through.

Stiles stumbled to his bed, but didn’t quite make it before his knees buckled and he fell to the floor. He stayed there, not quite sprawled out, but curled in on himself, arms crossed over his chest as he shook. He could do nothing but lay there, his father’s accusations all he could think about. He had finally done it, he had finally driven away the only person he had left. He had no one left, he was alone.

When Wei Ying finally lifts his head up and catches sight of Lan Wangji, his eyes sparkle with mirth. Wangji stays on the piano bench as they’re closing up. Wei Ying chews his lip, knowing what he’s going to do but horrified at himself. But what’s the alternative: kick the guy out and find him sleeping beside the dumpster in the morning? And that’s if the cops don’t take him in for vagrancy.
“Wangji?”
Wangji looks up.
Please don’t be a serial killer. “So, we’re closing up for the night, but A-Yuan and I live upstairs. Do you want to join us for dinner?”
Wangji blinks. His head bobs in what’s probably a yes.
“Great!”
Fuck.
Or a ragged monosyllabic man wearing a collar shows up at Wei Ying's music store. Wei Ying and A-Yuan ask, is anyone going to adopt this guy? And then they don't wait for an answer.
