Sleep would not return. Edelgard knew it all too well.
Haunted nightly by her past, she had long since learned trying again was futile.
With a long sigh, the Adrestian heir curled into herself, feeling the chill of the night press against her. Why had the goddess cursed her so? she wondered, as she always did. Another night on borrowed time, another night before she would have to leave the monastery behind.
Nothing in this room could calm her. Not truly. Nothing like-
Byleth.
Heat rose to her cheeks. Frustration came first, that familiar ache of longing she never dared name. Then, reluctantly, something softer. A thought she had avoided for far too long.
Edelgard could not sleep tonight. Not alone. Hugging herself tighter, debating silently with her own resolve, she rose.
Byleth was merely a walk away. A walk the Flame Emperor had now decided to take.
