Summary
There’s an unfrosted cake sitting in the center of their table, and it’s rotting away.
Darry tries to ignore it. His eyes, head, chest, limbs themselves throb every time he looks at it—so he doesn’t. No one’s touched it, even though they’ve scrubbed every other inch of the house far past clean by now. It simply sits there, made stale by unrestricted air that dries it out and makes it unappetizing in addition to completely untouchable.
The ants will have their way soon, though, because for the first time in Darry’s memory, a chocolate cake has gone uneaten for an entire two weeks.

“But what I didn’t see was everything that my brother gave up so that I could stay with my family. So that I could grow up in my own home. You gave up your dreams, so that I could follow my own. And I certainly didn’t make it any easier for you.”
