    “We cannot trade with anybody whom we do not trust to have the best interests of our people in mind. So, we make the leader a challenge. If he passes, then we trade as agreed and with a bonus added, for goodwill.”

    “And if I fail?” John stepped forward to support Teyla, motioning Ford to stick with Rodney and try and keep him a little way back and ready to run.

    Their leader, Hoban, bowed slightly.

    “Then the penalty is made, and you go home without the trade.”

    ‘Going home’ sounded good. ‘Penalty’ did not. ‘Penalty’ rang all sort of alarm bells and a siren so loud that John’s head was ringing with it.
