Summary
Success has always come easily to Cecily Williams. She's never doubted her ability to do whatever she puts her mind to: talent landed her a place at a top college, hard work got her through law school, and sheer determination got her through the difficult period of her husband's deployment and her son's birth. Even as the shadow of war crept closer to home, she was confident that everything would turn out all right in the end.
She may need to reconsider that assessment.

Summary
Cecily looked up and past him, watching their blurry reflections shift across the fogged glass of the window. "I know what I would have done before the War if I'd gotten an unjust order. I'd have done the right thing and said the cost didn't matter."
Nick's disapproval was palpable. He stubbed out his cigarette, a fierce little plume of smoke rising from the ashtray, and crossed his arms. "And now?"
"I—" She swallowed. "I don't know how the hell I can get out of it."
(Cecily and Nick go to Far Harbor. Back in the Commonwealth, Danse makes friends with the settlers.)

Summary
It wasn't politic to say in civilian company, but Danse normally enjoyed combat. Not the death or the horror or the stench, but the excitement of the struggle and the satisfaction when it was over. The security of knowing you lived another day while your enemy didn’t. The pride of doing something you were good at for a cause you believed in.
Not this. This was just survival. He felt like a damn radroach—except that even a radroach was a natural creature, not something... manufactured. Artificial. A hunted animal had more right to its freedom than Danse did.

Summary
It was strange to think about, but once she got Shaun back, she knew that she wouldn’t have wanted to go back to life before the vault even if she could have. The life she’d had in Sanctuary Hills seemed like a strangely artificial dream, the colours too bright, everything fake. Life in the Commonwealth was dangerous and gritty, but she loved it. She felt more at home gunning down raiders and learning how to maintain a suit of power armor than she ever had dealing with neighbors or making casseroles.
She was so damned selfish.

Summary
“Charlie, I am happy.” Danse brushed his knuckles along her cheek, the fine lines around his eyes crinkling with the curving of his mouth, “This is the happiest I’ve ever been.”
Danse has been away, Charlie's been worried, and perhaps Danse finally understands what it means to be truly happy - what it means to be human.
