Varang was an entity, a goddess in her own realm. She was meant to be worshipped, not the other way around. She could feel her heart racing and a kind of fear forming within her at the look he gave her, so kind, open, and vulnerable. It made her want to punch him, to grab a spear and plunge it deep into his throat so he would never repeat that expression, but instead she remained quiet, as quiet as she could be.
She pressed the child a little tighter against her chest, who in response only purred more, feeling the steady beating of her mother's heart. Varang felt violated, betrayed. How? How could he do this to her? Her firstborn. She should be strong, she should be ruthless, her successor to lead the Mangkwan into an era of terror and fire when she was no longer there.
That tiny being could do none of that.
