And when Ilya lifts his head, gaze roving through the crowd, Shane can’t look away, pinned in place when those hazel eyes land on him. The smile Ilya had been wearing falters, his hands stilling on the woman’s waist. His body still moves with the music, but Ilya is a man transfixed, staring at Shane in a way that makes his skin prickle.
And for a moment the world quiets.
The music dulls to a distant thrum, the press of bodies fading until there’s only the space between them. Shane can hear his own breathing, too loud, too unsteady, his heart hammering like it’s trying to break free. Ilya’s gaze holds him there, captive, sharp and searching, stripping everything else away.
