He looked over at her, humming in acknowledgement. Her cheeks were rosy from her laughter and her eyes sparkled with amusement. Loid couldn’t tear his eyes away this time. The warm atmosphere added to his drowsiness and the contentment from the evening made for a soothing effect, permitting his thoughts to drift off about the woman sitting next to him.

“I need to get strong…” Yuta began, trailing off.
“You’re already a special-grade, how much stronger could you possibly need to get?” Maki scoffed lightly, rolling her eyes. Yuta’s brow furrowed at this, clearly missing the jokey tone in her voice.
“I was a special-grade last year, wasn’t I? When everything with Geto happened.” Yuta’s voice got quieter, and Maki felt her entire body tense up. She really, really hated being reminded of that. “I don’t want something like that to happen to you again.”
