Summary
Ratio’s successful and a genius and and a very attractive Alpha who respects people– why would someone like that date him? Aventurine may be in love, but he’s not delusional.
But he fell in love with the professor anyway, and he couldn’t do much about it except keep his the true depth of his feelings close to his chest and still greedily try to keep Ratio to himself. Maybe even woo him, somehow. The thought of using his scent to aid in his seduction had crossed his mind many times– Avgin pheromones were known to be more addicting than the usual Omega’s pheromones, after all– but he refused to stoop that low.
So he tried to woo Ratio in subtle ways. Ways he could play off if he ever got rejected. But Ratio didn’t realise anything. At all. Every innuendo and attempt to flirt got brushed off or taken in a not flirty way.

Valentine's Day, the holiday of love and couples galore is usually a lonely day for Aventurine. To add onto the loneliness, he watches on of Ratio's assistants hang all over the doctor after a meeting. Confronting the man with jealousy brewing inside Aventurine wasn't the best idea, though through their short exchange (and probably due to his divine luck) Aventurine somehow lands a date with the esteemed Dr. Veritas Ratio.

After a mission gone wrong, Aventurine found himself in the emergency room. To his dismay, it was the very same hospital his beloved Dr. Ratio was visiting as a guest professor. Even so, he hadn't anticipated a flustered Ratio to storm into his room, take over his case, and even assume responsibility for him at discharge.
Surely, this was nothing more than wanting to care for a friend, right?

Comment from DR. RATIO : What complete rubbish.
Ratio and Aventurine have gotten closer, and closer, and closer, until something has to give. That something was always going to be Aventurine.
(Ratio would argue that he gave in much earlier, it simply wasn't as dramatic.)

A bust. Not just any bust. That man’s bust: Aventurine.
The bust glows faintly, its marble skin catching the light like Aventurine’s own under the late-afternoon sun that filters through their shared dorm window.
Ratio hurls a dust cloth over the bust.

Kakavasha opened the moka pot, damped the left-over coffee from last night inside the bottom chamber, then added the funnel and filled it with coffee powder. He closed the moka pot and put it on the stove, ready to start it, when a large hand stopped his from turning it on.
A warm, heavy weight fell over his back, slightly pushing Kakavasha against the stove.
“You’re going to give yourself palpitations, if you drink that abomination,” Ratio muttered, his breath teasing Kakavasha’s ear — standing close enough that his morning stubble tickled Kakavasha. It was as if Ratio was trying to beat his ‘Super Coffee’ in giving him heart problems first.

“Why’d you call me a gambler?”
Ratio’s head tilts again. His face doesn’t move much. But Aventurine swears he sees the shadow of something like amusement in his features—wry and private, like he’s smiling at a joke no one else heard.
“I can hear it,” Ratio says.
“Hear what?”
“Every time you shift your weight,” Ratio responds, voice low, “there’s a coin in your coat or pants pocket. It strikes against the lining three times—once when you move, twice when you stop. It’s weighted. Slightly larger than standard-issue credits. Smooth edge. It doesn’t roll.”
Aventurine stares.
Ratio lifts his chin. “It is not a commemorative token. It is not a medallion. It’s the kind used in high-stakes tables. Heavy enough to flip with flair, thick enough to stack without slippage. You gamble. Or you want people to think you do.”
A beat.
Aventurine’s mouth goes a little slack. His tongue clicks against the roof of it, dry. “You heard that?”
“I hear everything,”
Aventurine laughs, but it’s shaky, breathless. “You're unnerving, you know that?”
“I get that frequently.”

Aventurine felt his heart drop.
Aventurine desperately searches for the person Ratio likes to revert him back into a human.
Ratio can't tell him he's being foolish. He's only capable of meowing right now, after all.

There is an inexplicable draw to Veritas Ratio, even as little as Aventurine actually knows about him, something beyond whatever surface level attraction there was to begin with. It’s not so ridiculous—Veritas is attractive, seems to be interested in Aventurine, and inexplicably was able to drop everything to run his mothers’ florist business for three months. That kind of person is fascinating, objectively, and unique things have always caught Aventurine’s attention.
He can’t remember the last time he looked at someone and thought, I think I want to date you, but that’s enough of an anomaly to make Veritas someone worth learning more about.
