See, because Jason is apparently an idiot, the family had placed a bet on this game of monopoly. The first to go bankrupt would have to do this stupid trend that Dick had seen online, where grown children go up to their parents randomly and climb into their laps to see how they react.
Sure, why the hell not! This will be so funny when anyone but him loses.
… and then Jason goes bankrupt first.

Jason loses a bet. But when Bruce finds out about the bet, he reacts in a way the family would never expect.

The ballerinas were circling now; Giselle doing pirouettes en dehours in the middle of her ring of spirits, and Bruce could see the spinning figures and the milky fog reflecting back in a hazy white ring around Jason’s pupils.
The veil that was draped over Giselle was much more like a shroud than anything, almost opaque enough to conceal, and Bruce internally applauded the choice in set design, as the silhouette of her on the closed casket surrounded by fog and ghosts was striking and haunting.
He glanced down again and a tiny strike of something hit his heart when he saw the glimmer of a tear reflecting off of Jason’s waterline, rolling quickly down his too-gaunt cheek and hidden by him ducking his head, as though he could sense Batman’s covered eyes on him.
Bruce granted him the privacy of looking away.

It's a juvenile thing to worry over and it hits Jason, square in the throat, that it's juvenile because Bruce buried his fourteen year old son. Because it's exactly the thing Jason used to get in fights over: food, blankets, sweatshirts, resources he wasn't used to having. Jason's so tall now he probably wouldn't fit under the throw anyway, and Jason's nose itches when he realizes that he can't exactly call his dad to tell him that.
"Merry Christmas, Jason. I hope you're warm. I hope you're safe."
He isn't safe. He can never seem to get warm, even though it normally pushes ninety degrees in the desert. He feels marginally better at night, when the sun dips and the frigid wind starts to blow. At least then, it makes more sense to be cold.
or; Bruce Wayne keeps calling his dead son's phone near Christmas time, but maybe he's not as dead as he thinks.

The one night his pseudo father puts his foot down, Bruce Wayne stirs awake with an elevated heart rate. There's dread pooling in his stomach, and every time he closes his eyes to try and go back to sleep, he just can't.
So, as any normal father would do, he gets out of bed and checks on his children to make sure they're all still breathing and alive. When it's confirmed that all of them are sleeping soundly wherever they are, Bruce goes right back to sleep.
Aka, Bruce has a nightmare and checks on his kids. God forbid he ask why his daughter is face down on the living room floor.
