Summary
In the wake of an ill-planned act of vigilante justice, Eddie Munson plans a quiet exit for his last year at Hawkins High. He says goodbye to his drug-dealing, loosens his tight grip on The Hellfire Club, on his friends, and on the one person who had made everything make sense. Months later, alone and still licking his wounds, he receives a mysterious phone call from the one friend he'd never gotten the chance to say goodbye to. Desperate to solve the mystery of her disappearance, Eddie is forced to enter an underworld of crime and deceit that has somehow managed to infiltrate every last corner of the life he'd thought he'd left behind.

Summary
Steve looks up at the sound of Eddie pushing the door closed. “Hey. I put your plate in the fridge.” He sounds tired, looks tired, definitely is tired, with a whole day of running after middle schoolers followed by class over in Bloomington behind him. Steve keeps saying it’s fine, he’s got it, and Eddie doesn’t doubt it, he just also knows how packed Steve’s schedule is these days. (Eddie never thought he’d be putting his campaign planning abilities to use helping Steve draw up a class schedule but here they are. It’s not the strangest thing that’s happened to him, of course not, but he thinks it’s worth noting among the unexpected.)
There’s a lot of that happening these days though, Eddie figures, so many that’s just the new ordinary for him.

“Eddie.” Steve says around a smile, and it tugs the strings of Eddie’s daydream balloon, sends it slowly floating back to Earth.
“Hm?” He responds, distracted.
Steve opens his eyes, squinting in the late afternoon sun.
“No, ‘Eddie.’ That’s what you’re writing.”

Yeah, it is. Eddie looks down at his finger, the one that’s been operating on autopilot while he’s been lost in his thoughts, and watches as it finishes rounding out the curve of the final e.

Summary
“...Dustin was being very mean,” El says cautiously. Her eyebrows are knit together in that way that always makes Max want to hold her and tell her it’ll be okay.
“He’s been weird, since… everything.”
Lucas thinks that he’ll calm down once Eddie is back on his feet. Max thinks that he’s being a selfish little drama queen, but she doesn’t really have a leg to stand on when it comes to self-pitying bullshit, so she’s been biting her tongue.
“That doesn’t mean it’s okay to… talk to Steve like that. Like he’s stupid.”
“Well…” Max tries to joke, and El glares. “Sorry.”
“You were not helping.”
Max puts down her hairbrush. She’s… maybe also been weird. Since everything.
