Gil's house was far too quiet. He could hear every little sound—the faint clicking of the heater, the soft hum of the refrigerator. It was almost too much, shifting from the overwhelming loudness of the hospital to this nearly tomblike silence. It pulled his attention back to the faint pounding in his head, the subtle burning of his neck.
He glanced over at Malcolm, who was sitting next to him on the couch, still and completely silent. He was staring numbly at the sleeves of his coat, which were still faintly tinted red with blood—Gil’s blood.

When it all gets to be too much again, when it seems like no one is there for him, all he can think about is the kind officer once more. But, he only has one way of finding him. Or, rather, of making Gil find him.
It may not be Malcolm's best plan, but it all works out in the end.

His father was a serial killer and he was bad and he enjoyed killing people and he's just not what Malcolm is. Malcolm doesn't ever want to be like Martin and Malcolm knows he isn't Martin. But Malcolm keeps doing things that say otherwise. Malcolm needed to kill the first parakeet, it was in pain. Malcolm needed to help the other birds too.

After another few moments go by, Gil tentatively asks, “Jess?”
“Gil!” Jessica breathes out, whirling around to look at him. “You’re here. I didn’t even hear you...come in,” she murmurs, her eyes not meeting his own. Gil starts to move again, getting about halfway through the dining room before Jessica starts to back away, raising one hand up as she dips her head.
“Hey,” Gil murmurs, digging his heels into the ground to prevent himself from gravitating towards her more than he already has. “What’s wrong? Is it Malcolm?”
Jessica shakes her head, pursing her lips. “No. No, Malcolm, he’s...he’s fine. As fine as he can be. It’s not Malcolm, it’s...you, Gil,” she says, almost all in one breath.
