Summary
Nightingale was just a young seeker when Soundwave took him in, and it wasn't long after the war had started when he was also taken under the literal and metaphorical wings of Starscream. All seemed well, but a cybertonian war isn’t really the best place to grow up— being torn away from his friends, slowly losing the little bits of family he has left, never really knowing who he can trust, and to top it all off, dying in an incident with an experimental portal that left him with powers unlike anyone on Cybertron had ever seen.
Why does this kind of stuff always happen to him?

Summary
Imagine, if you will, a door.
Behind that door is an ocean, or a leviathan, or a prisoner pressed up against the wood, waiting for the day the door is opened. Whichever you like. This is only a metaphor, after all.
One day, the the door is cracked open, just a bit. Not enough for the prisoner to escape, but enough for them to shove a desperate, questing finger through the gap. Enough for the idea of freedom to tease them. Then, as unexpectedly as the door was opened, it slams shut, severing the finger from the prisoner's body.
This is what happened during the Watcher's Crown.
