Someone or something from above or below had apparently decided that no good deed goes unpunished, and that Ed’s punishment for agreeing to help out a friend would come in the form of one Stede Bonnet.
Stede Bonnet, who Ed had first met last year, via the aforementioned merging of the friend groups. Stede Bonnet, who Ed had fallen hopelessly head over heels for the first time they’d spoken, and who he’d been quietly pining over ever since. And, most importantly, Stede Bonnet who Ed is apparently expected to sort of… swoon up against, and then just exist there for the next few hours while strangers gawk at them, and somehow be normal about the whole thing. All while wearing a dress with approximately seven layers of fabric and thirteen different kinds of ribbon and lace, of course.

“What are you doing?” he started to ask, trailing off quickly as his mouth went dry at the sight of the man’s bare chest where he had pulled his undershirt all the way up. Stede was too distracted to finish speaking by the overall impression: a canvas of ink covered skin, muscular and soft in all the right places, a tantalizing trail of dark hair leading Stede’s eyes down, down…
Fuck. Focus, Bonnet.
He dragged his focus back to the inked images which were surely the point of this man’s public indecency.

He had made up his mind less than a week after they were all reunited, Stede and his ragtag crew crammed into the makeshift brig like a tin of sardines. He was done with the lot of them, Stede especially, and this time he’d run a sword through each one of them before leaving them on an island.
But first, though, the raid. They’d happened upon the ship almost without warning, a midsize Spanish vessel sitting low in the water, heavy with spices or silver or jewels, and vengeance be damned, Blackbeard was neither fool enough to let a boon slip through his fingers nor stupid enough to leave able fighters sitting restless in his ship while his loyal crew were buying treasure with blood. So he’d sent Fang to unlatch the door, shoved a sword into each of their hands, and marched them onto deck, and if they died fighting so much the better.
Stede gets injured. Blackbeard panics.

Slow, slow, slow. Lips, tongues, teeth. Stede thinks about time, about the Adagio for Strings, how it pulls like taffy over a tempo as slow as a lover’s sleeping breaths. Thinks that slow, for Ed, might be more about tenderness than caution. Thinks about him in the cabin earlier, wondering aloud whether his probation would last a day, or maybe more than one day. He thinks that maybe this is slow for Ed. He snakes his arm around Ed’s waist, draws him closer, presses their bodies together.
“I love you,” he whispers, and Ed presses his forehead to Stede’s.
“Take me to bed,” Ed murmurs, and Stede asks, because he has to.
“Are you sure? You said –”
“Take me to bed slowly,” Ed says, and Stede laughs, kisses his lips, his cheeks, his forehead.

There, he meets senior paleontologist Edward Teach, who’s sick of museum work and hates that the amateur digs exploit the free labor of people who are passionate about paleontology and archaeology. He’s also sick of most of the people he meets on these digs, who all treat him like an unapproachable god. Until he meets Stede Bonnet, who has heard his name but never had a face to put it to and actually treats him like a person for the first time since he discovered a major fossil. Stede is freshly divorced and has never thought about his sexuality. But he feels a strange draw to Ed that he’s never felt with anyone before.
