A RE-WRITE OF ANOTHER WORK OF MINE.
In an alternate timeline not far from our own, the government has enacted laws to place non-violent prisoners into "servitude". Later, a related law was enacted called the Last Resort Act, which allowed the homeless and destitute to be placed into servitude as well. On paper, it's supposed to "reduce overcrowded prisons, or give the homeless an alternative to sleeping on the street."
In practice, it's unchecked slave-labor for the rich.
Permanently injured and becoming a victim of the Last Resort Act, Stephen Strange finds himself at the hands of Justin Hammer, who one day without warning, "gifts" him to Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, who neither approve nor want participation in this practice.
They'd been "gifted" slaves before, and it's always the same- they apply for their freedom, let them stay at Stark Tower to rest and recover, and then they help them integrate back into society.
It was supposed to be the same way with Stephen.
Supposed to be.
