It's late when Harry ends up back at the Church, staring at the stained glass image of Dolores Dei. Something about her provokes something deep and terrible within him, and he doesn't even realise that he's cut his hand on the broken glass until Kim pulls him from his delusion.
But what is Kim doing at the Church this late?
Harry takes it, just like he would have taken Dolores Dei at the Church. Somewhere within him, a sense of pride swells as he consciously focuses on the sharp, tight pain instead of the warmth of Lieutenant Kitsuragi’s palm underneath his. The more he leans into the bitter side of things, the easier it is to embrace the life he is telling himself to lead, like a confirmation bias that he has woken up into the worst timeline his soul could find itself in. Choosing agony makes it noble, holy, sacred. Like if he finds enough of it then there’ll be something on the other side – Dolores Dei or Kim Kitsuragi or the endless Pale itself – with an equal amount of comfort that he will finally be deserving of.

Jean looked at the reflection in the window. Judit was obviously worried, which was no novelty. They were the infamous moping duo of the 41st Precinct. Both their faces were great for announcing missing people and sailors lost at sea or, worst case scenario, driven mad by the Pale. And it was not like there was any other type of news for them to deliver. In a sense, they had really lucked out with the 'dark-and-pained' demeanour. However, a faceful of regret was not as effective if blooming with hickeys. Of all the days, Jean had to choose a Thursday to trim his beard.
