Bucky hates this. Hates this assignment. Hates this place. Hates everything about it.
Hates that he and Sam agreed to do Rhodes a little favor, go check out a not strictly on the books government installation after the last bunch of poor saps Rhodes sent there never came back out.
Hates being in this terrible, creepy underground facility, this warped reflection of all the other terrible, creepy underground facilities he spent way too much of the past eighty years in. Hates how there’s always an unpleasant memory around the next corner. And something worse around the rest.
He hates the realization that unpleasant memories are quickly becoming the least of his problems. And he really hates the sinking feeling that they might not make it out of here intact. Or at all.

Summary
Sam always sort of thought the end of the world would be a). some sort of alien invasion again and b). something he could at least attempt to stop. But when the newest apocalypse comes in the form of a nuclear warhead, he can't exactly fly over to whoever sent it and say "Hey, asshole, haven't you ever seen War Games?" Especially when nobody's really sure who sent it.
So what does he do about it, as Captain America? There's not exactly a rulebook, but it turns out it involves ferrying President Asshole and his cartoonishly-evil Secretary of Defense through the Maryland wilderness while trying to keep his own friends alive despite their best attempts to get themselves killed.
It also involves a fair amount of pining, because he's started to notice that his best friend looks unfairly attractive when sweaty, bloody, and fresh from a helicopter crash...

Of course that’s the first word to leave his mouth when he realizes it. Stark just gives a disinterested remark of “Language” from where he’s sitting at his lab, soldering tools sparking as he repairs Bucky’s arm. Bucky, who is currently sitting silently (after hours of grumbling and bemoaning) at Stark’s side, glances up, an eyebrow arching as he gives Steve an expectant look.
Steve has no words for his friend, because how is he supposed to explain to him that he just realized he’s in love with him?
