Summary
People don't see Pierre as a team player - the countless times he has fought tooth and nail against his team seeming to prove to people that Pierre doesn't have what it takes to submit to formation. Pierre resents that statement. To paint him with that statement misses a key element as to why he's been driving like this through the past season - Esteban. It's not that he would simply let any other driver win - to think so ignores that no other driver would behave that way, either. Rather, it's their history - just like the weather can sometimes be on track, Esteban makes him feel hot and cold, emotions and feelings jarring, combining until his head hurts - as if he went from a very warm place to a very cold place very fast, with no time to adjust to either temperature. Although sometimes these days Pierre feels like rather from warm to cold, he's going from cold to warm, further disorienting him.
...Or: After both the members of Alpine team place 2nd and 3rd in the race in Brazil, Pierre reflects on his and Esteban's relationship amid dizzying memories and post race obligations.

“Get your fucking hand away.”
At first, Esteban didn't know what to make of the change in Pierre. When he noticed that Pierre had stopped making scathing comments, that instead of sniping at him he offered soft, discreet smiles, that he seemed to always be close but not imposing himself, his initial reaction was to hesitate. Because Pierre wasn't like that with him. Not for a long time. The last time he had felt the warmth of his presence had been when they were still teenagers, before everything had broken down between them.
But Pierre was persistent.
