It’s a never-ending wonder to him to consider the love stored in wood and plaster, oil paint and clay, lodged in the curlicues of fine metalwork and the too-deep residue of furniture polish. He gently removes the shards of broken glass from the frame, unscrews the clock face and walks it over to Nile’s bench, and spends a time simply touching each wonderful detail of the casing as if to reassure the wood of his good intentions.
“I’m almost jealous,” Joe says softly, and Nicky looks up to see him standing on the other side of the bench, the shoulders of his jacket splattered with raindrops. He’s smiling fondly, hands stuffed in the pockets of his jeans.

It hardly looked like the creature they had saved earlier, nearly ten times the size and more arms than an octopus should have.
