    AKA: Tina is sick and the only girl who can help her is completely clueless.

    Tina has to excuse herself to Bette’s bathroom and lock the door, avoiding the mirror as she crouches over the toilet. She retches and she wheezes, roots and vines squeezing her lungs, tickling her ribcage with an aching caress.

    Love hurts, the hyacinth whispers to Tina, as it forces itself from her mouth in a flurry of blue and purple petals. It presses its roots into her lungs and again Tina wheezes, eyes falling shut as she spews more petals. This is what love is, it reminds her, each thorn feeling like a dagger, love is pain.

    Bette knocks on the bathroom door. “Is everything okay, Tina?”

    Tina flushes the toilet and wipes her eyes on her woollen sleeves. “I’m okay, I’ll only be a minute.”

    Bette hesitates but Tina hears her footsteps carry her back to the bedroom. Tina wipes her mouth and coughs up one last, mangled petal. In her soft, pale hands it looks like a splatter of blood, and she whimpers.
