“What are you, scared, Aizawa?” Kayama leered, leaning in too close and poking at his side.
Shouta swatted her hand away. “Why would I be scared?” he scoffed. “They’re just mirrors.”
Hizashi fidgeted, leaning closer in a way that would be imperceptible if Shouta weren’t ridiculously over-aware of him. “The place looked deserted when we came in… maybe we should leave? We could still make it to the party!”
“We can’t leave without solving the maze,” Shouta said, irritably.

"Wow Shouta! Onishi likes me - do you believe it?” Hizashi said. He felt bad that he’d have to turn her down, but it wouldn’t be fair to date her when he liked somebody else. He glanced over at Shouta, trying to gauge his reaction. It was selfish, but Hizashi hoped, just a little, that knowing somebody was interested in him would make Shouta see him in a different light.
“Wow,” Shouta repeated, looking decidedly un-wowed.

Summary
Hizashi doesn’t notice, too caught up in his own work. His glasses are sliding down his nose, and his hair is beginning to fall free of its loose bun. The tip of his tongue pokes out the side of his mouth as he does his calculations, and Shouta is suddenly overcome with the desire to hold onto this moment forever. He’s not sure why it feels so urgent - they’ve spent a thousand nights like this. There are thousands more ahead of them, with any luck at all. But something about the way Hizashi looks right now feels fleeting and precious, like the blink of a firefly.
Shouta shoves the paper in front of him forward until Hizashi looks up. “You know, if we got married, we might qualify for a tax break.”

He tries to put all the enthusiasm he feels into it, to reassure Shouta that this step in their friendship is wanted and welcome.
It seems to work. Shouta’s shoulders relax, and he grins up at Hizashi, wiping his hair out of his eyes. He misses a piece, and Hizashi has to shove his hands into his pockets to keep from giving in to the strange impulse to tuck it behind Shouta’s ear.
It’s different, after that.
