Summary
It was an accepted fact that an agent’s daemon settled either very early or very late. Invariably, those that settled early settled on that first night. Those children normally ended up on Night Watch: Talents fading fast and lifespans even shorter. Bartolomé and Lucy were caught between a rock and a hard place. They didn't want the Night Watch but they wanted certainty. They wanted to settle, so they would know who they were and who they were meant to be. But things never worked out the way they wanted, did they?

Plunk!
Lockwood just about jumped out of his skin. On instinct he reached for Lucy, her hand still lying atop the piano. His hand found hers in the dim light, fingers slotting through hers like puzzle pieces clicking together.
“I’m listening,” she breathed, and Lockwood wasn’t sure if she was speaking to him or the Visitor, but it was enough that he paused, rather than yanking her back immediately. Instead he hovered a moment longer, his other hand squeezing anxiously around the handle of his rapier.
