The meadow smells like wet grass. Crickets chirp, toads croak.
He knows he’ll find her out here. She’s been sleeping under the stars often in the last few years.
He knows the reason why. Everybody does. So no need to think about it.
Every time, she’d tell him, “It’s a pretty night out.” It’s true. It’s not the whole reason. It doesn’t need to be. She sometimes doesn’t remember she’s said it before. He never tells her that.
He never regrets it.

As age catches up to them, Sonic spends one last night under the stars with her. For now. He'll come home to her someday.

And he doesn’t want to pick up Sonic’s body in pieces from the floor, but Sonic’s waving a nonchalant hand before Shadow can voice his violent troubles.
“Worked well so far! I still have all my functioning limbs and everything.”
“Shame about the lack of functioning brain.”

“No,” Shadow growled, “stay awake.”
“Alright, whatever…” Sonic muttered, groaning as he sat himself up properly. “What’s… What’s going on?” He squinted at Shadow. “…I’m supposed to know you, aren’t I?”
