Kaeya scrunches up his nose childishly as he leans away. Because he is a child. Who is standing inside his office. And looking at him in a way that he hasn’t since their fight that day, with a mixture of admiration, teasing, and affection in wide blue eyes.

    Like they’re brothers.

Vile: He said that even though the Treasure Hoarders can come in handy occasionally, he draws the line at working with anyone who “threatens other people’s family.”
Vile: He also said, and I quote: “People like that are criminal to the core…all they deserve is to be hunted down and destroyed.”

—Vile, about “a certain gentleman” (“that guy [Traveler’s] such good friends with”), from the commission A Surprise Gift

When Diluc is ten, a few enterprising Treasure Hoarders decide they can make some quick Mora by kidnapping and ransoming the eldest son of Ragnvindr family.

His nine-year-old baby brother takes this very, very personally.

    ‘You’ve punched the Harbingers?’

‘Most of them, yeah.’ Diluc confirmed. ‘We’re going to conveniently ignore the fact I only barely survived doing so. That’s a minor detail. And besides, it would have been worth it.’

Kaeya visibly tensed, though Diluc couldn’t tell whether it was because the idea of him dying bothered him, or if it was something else.

‘Say…I don’t suppose you happened to have punched one of the…older, higher ranking Harbingers while you were at it?’

    ------------

Or: Diluc has punched Kaeya's birth father in the face before. Kaeya doesn't feel particularly upset about it.

    Summary

‘I’m afraid I don’t actually know what “home” means.’ Kaeya said, making Klee gasp in shock.

That was not the answer she had expected, especially not from someone as smart as Kaeya. He looked sad too, which made her think perhaps something bad had happened to his home. Perhaps someone had damaged it, or kicked him out, or he didn’t know how to get back in. Despite her better judgement, she asked him as much, and hoped it wouldn’t be too painful for him to think about.

Kaeya refused to meet her eyes at that particular question, though he didn’t seem to be looking at anything in particular.

‘I guess you could say I’ve lost my way there.’ he explained, before seemingly remembering something. ‘Actually, at this point, I don’t even know if there’s any home to return to at all.’

After hearing from so many people what their homes meant to them, Klee could hardly imagine what kind of pain Kaeya must have been feeling upon having that taken away from him.

    ---

Or: Klee asks people what "home" means to them. Upon learning Kaeya has lost his way back to his, she shows him how to get there.

(Or: Klee has more emotional maturity than Kaeya and Diluc combined, but she's happy to help.)

A glass is set down, clinking mutedly on the table cloth and, gingerly, another is picked up. Diluc gives it the same treatment as the one from before, as the ones from the past hour; drying methodically and slowly, aiming for perfection. Little can he actually see through the fog behind his eyes though, but the glass is set down spotless all the same.

His mind flows away, following the golden glimmer on the rim of the glass, through the ashen cloth in his hand and the constant motion of his arms.

    -

'Why did you tell me that night?' He wants to ask. 'Did you ever love us? How much of it was a lie? Did you never trust us enough to tell us? Did he know? Do you fear me?'

But all the questions would feel like fire in his throat and they would drown him before they came out.

‘Feeling lost?’ an all too familiar voice startled him from his thoughts.

Despite knowing all of this was nothing but an illusion, Kaeya still ducked behind one of the grapevines out of some sort of reflex. If not so he wouldn’t be caught, then for the sole reason there was no way he could face someone he’d once called father without breaking down; illusion or not. Perhaps if he waited long enough it would all pass by itself.

‘It’s alright, weary travellers are always welcome at Dawn Winery.’

If Kaeya didn’t know any better, he might think Crepus was actually talking to him. But such a thing was impossible, wasn’t it? Ley line distortions like this only ever recorded the past; the past could not be directly interacted with, and perhaps more importantly, could not be changed.

And yet when Kaeya peeked through the leaves, he found Crepus looking right at him.

‘You can see me?’ he breathed out.

‘I’m sorry to say my twelve-year-old sons are more adept at hiding than you are.’

    ---

Or: Kaeya gets to talk to Crepus through a ley line distortion. While the past itself cannot be changed, it fixes more than he thinks.

    Summary

While the Ragnvindr home possessed plenty of interesting artefacts and items to feast one’s eyes on, there was one thing in particular that had managed to capture Kaeya’s attention from the very beginning.

One might have expected him to be interested in some old family portrait or ancient heirloom, but while those were certainly interesting, Kaeya found himself most drawn to the fancy tea set on display on one of the many shelves.

Its vibrant red design with golden swirls made him think it had to have been made for the Ragnvindrs specifically. He didn’t think he’d ever seen anyone drink from it before either, meaning if they allowed for it at all, it was likely only used during special occasions.

While he himself much preferred Master Crepus’ hot chocolate over tea, this particular set had a certain hold on him.

    ---

Or: Crepus' wife gave him an enchanted tea set as a wedding gift. Many years later, it helps the two sons she never got to meet accept some things about themselves.

A Cavalry Captain walks into a bar and immediately slams a few thousand mora on the counter.

“Give me however much this’ll buy,” he says, and quite frankly, he looks horrendous. So much so it’s a bit strange, actually, Diluc thinks as he bends to pick up the coins that’ve toppled onto his feet in the process.

For one, he smells something between a ditch and a river. Probably both, given he also happens to be half caked in mud and various splatterings of bruises, and the lot of it seems to purple under the warm tavern lamplight as he smacks his forehead against the wood, "I don't care what, just make it strong."

The bottle of dandelion wine goes clunking back to the shelf, "Fire-water mixer?"

    "Perfect."

So the bird had a bit of an attitude problem.

As expected, he was too prideful to simply let a human touch him, let alone pick him up. Getting him inside had been an hour-long task, involving chasing the animal around with a blanket and cooing at him in an attempt to earn his trust. Now that they were finally inside however, the little guy was prancing around as if he owned the place.

He hadn’t allowed Kaeya to take a look at the ring around his leg even after getting treats, nipping at his fingers any time he tried, but he also didn’t seem to be particularly upset about being here.

‘You remind me of someone, you know?’ Kaeya sighed as he observed the bird walking around. ‘Someone equally stubborn, and unwilling to accept help. Ah, you even share the tendency to lash out at people who care about you.’

The bird looked up at him almost as if somehow understanding the words, tilting his head and blinking curiously, which made Kaeya grin in amusement.

‘Let’s call you Noctua for now.’

    ---

Or: Kaeya takes care of the injured bird that crashed against his window, not knowing it's Diluc's pet bird.

“What—“ is all Kaeya manages to get out before Diluc’s eyes roll back behind his head and his body is slumping forward, as if Diluc made one last ditch effort to make himself fall towards Kaeya. Kaeya manages to catch him before he makes an unpleasant acquaintance with Kaeya’s floor and loops his arms around Diluc’s unconscious body.

“Genuinely, what the fuck?” Kaeya breathes out as he holds an unconscious and bleeding Diluc by his front door and contemplates if this is all just another terrible dream of his.

The wheeze of pain Diluc lets out the next second assures him that no, this is not a bad dream and in fact was his reality right now: holding his estranged adoptive brother with blood running down a gaping wound in his stomach and ruining Kaeya’s new peacock pyjamas

    Fucking great.

Diluc shows up at Kaeya's door with a potentially life-threatening stab wound, and Kaeya takes care of it in Kaeya fashion.

“Coming!” Al-Haitham calls, navigating the maze of packing peanuts and crates. He undoes the latch on the door and lets it swing open, fully expecting to see the bearded face of his landlord only to be met with the vermillion-eyed face of somebody he had given up hope on seeing for the rest of his life.

There’s a long moment of silence. The aching swell of Vivaldi in the background and the rushing in his ears like the ocean waves.

    “...Kaveh?”

Kaveh, globally-renowned musician, disappears off the face of Teyvat. Five years later, he shows up outside of Al-Haitham's door with no explanation but to ask for a bed to sleep in.

It's fine. They only have thirteen years of history, after all.

Diluc just stared at him with a stupid expression that made Kaeya want to laugh. He walked out and was surprised at how warm the night was. He breathed in deeply, enjoying the lack of discomfort before it came back because it will.

He sure as hell isn’t going to tell Diluc a thing. It isn’t affecting him as far as Kaeya can tell, and the last thing he wants to do is tell Diluc that he is the only thing keeping him alive apparently.

Or, Kaeya gets cursed by a domain and the only way to keep from dying is Diluc.

But Kaeya still can’t trust his former brother, and Diluc doesn’t know if he should ever be trusted with Kaeya’s life again.
