Knives’s voice returned slightly hushed, and softer than Legato had ever heard, so uncharacteristically unaggressive a chill sprinted up and danced upon his spine.
“There was a song my mother loved,” Knives breathed.

“Don’t move,” Knives instructed, drawing upon the script with which he had played the interaction over in the days prior, “and do not speak.”
Legato did not give any physical acknowledgment, but Knives knew he would obey without even the smallest resistance.
In accordance with the plan he had developed, Knives lifted his bare right hand. Before his logical mind scolded him, before overwhelming disgust could claim him and prevent him from achieving his answers, before he could reconsider, he acted.
He cupped the side of Legato’s face, and only when he met the incredible warmth of his skin did he realize the coldness of his own. Were all humans so warm?

Knives has numerous questions about human relationships, about what goodness Vash could possibly see in a human, and decides to find some answers, utilizing Legato to do so.

Summary
They depend on each other, maybe too much for friends. Kojiro doesn't want Kaoru to hurt the way he does. He doesn't like the feelings it brings up, not when he knows he can stop some of it. This pain doesn't have to exist, so Kojiro will do what he can to keep it away. He knows Kaoru will too, not when their friendship is the only thing keeping them going most of the time.
