Mitsuba likes to believe that he knows himself better than anyone else – he’s watched all of the school’s memories of Sousuke countless number of times. He’s seen all the times he put himself out there, aching for something more, someone to acknowledge him. To prove to him that his life meant something.
But all he managed to become was the tragic boy who managed to live and die all alone. So obsessed with how he looked in other people’s eyes, that he forgot to live for himself.

“Well, your hair looks fine to me,” Kou says, looking at him with a puzzled expression. Granted, the pink boy is wearing a thick yellow beanie on his head, but Kou’s pretty sure that there’s worse out there.
“It definitely is not fine.” He suddenly looks up at Kou with a smirk on his face. “But I guess, compared to your bird’s nest of hair, it really isn’t all that bad.”
Kou blinks owlishly. “What’s wrong with my hair?”

“Oh come on!” Kou groans, slapping his deck of cards onto the floor. “How do you keep winning?”
He has the urge to hull them straight into the looming pit in the centre of Mitsuba’s boundary. He obviously doesn’t; he has more self control than that. The boy in front of him seems to relish in Kou’s frustrations – he’s laughing so hard that he practically leans into the railing behind him.
Kou’s down thirty-two points to three. He only knows this because of the small audience of arms that are keeping track of their scores in the background. Seriously, he knew that he was bad at card games, but he didn’t know that he was this bad at them. Like, getting absolutely pummeled six feet under by someone who didn’t even know the rules an hour ago bad.
Mitsuba’s still grinning as if he’d just won the lottery. Kou doesn’t think that he’s ever seen him smile so brightly before, and it’s enough to make him happy too. It almost makes the last hour of his personal hell worth it.
But really, it was almost as if Mitsuba could see his cards.
