“Why’d you volunteer, Tim?” Lucy asks quietly.
It’s the question that’s been plaguing her for the past two days, ever since she saw his name on the list. There’s a lot of things that Tim hates, but she’s pretty sure undercover work might be at the forefront. Yet, he had volunteered to do a long-term op, posing as her husband. She knows he’s trying to pay everything back to her—small doses, he had said. But... This is a lot.
This isn’t just some small dose. This is just about as big as a dose that anything could be.
“Because,” Tim starts heavily, “I’ll always have your back. As long as you’ll let me.”

“He works at Mid-Wilshire with my dad,” he whispers. “He’s a TO… or at least he was. I guess something happened and he was sent here to teach instead of training, though my father won’t tell me what. But it’s definitely a demotion, so I wouldn’t mess with him. He’s probably pissed about it and out to ruin our lives.”
Lucy chews thoughtfully on the end of her pen as she half listens, half wonders.
What could Officer Bradford have done to deserve a demotion?
And does she want to get on his bad side?
She kind of liked the spark she’d seen in him this morning, and the way he’d approached her and yelled at her had caused something warm and funny to happen in her belly.
She kind of wants to poke at him again, just to see what happens.

So yeah, mistakes were definitely made and that’s how he’s ended up here. It’s two months later, and he’s at Lopez’s rescheduled wedding standing across from Lucy and her boyfriend. Her boyfriend who is not him. Her boyfriend with floppy blond hair and a pocket square that matches his tie. Her boyfriend who works in finance, which is just... Tim’s confident he could eventually understand what the hell it actually means to work in finance, but he’d rather eat glass.
