Summary
The numbers on the back of her hand read 00:02:26 when the bell rings out again. Each time, it sets Savannah further on edge — at some point closer to zero, the bell will chime and her actual soulmate will walk in through the door. It’s an intimidating prospect.
“Okay, what the freak. This place doesn’t do mochas?!”
A loud voice interrupts her quiet contemplation. Savannah grimaces into her cup.
(The day has finally arrived for Savannah to meet her soulmate. If only the guy in the coffee shop would shut up for two minutes and let her have her moment.)

Summary
“This hurts,” 5up complains plaintively when Steve massages the water into his scalp, using his free hand.
“Tough shit, 5up. That’s what you get for wanting to look like Troye Sivan.” Steve prods him and snorts. “Which you don’t, by the way.”
(5up goes blond. He’s lucky he has such a kind and supportive boyfriend.)

“Where’s the engagement ring?” David asks cheekily. 5up splutters.
“The engagement— What? There is no— We aren’t— Steven and I are not like that.” He raises his chin defiantly, looking down his nose at David. Or he tries to, at least. The slight height disparity works to his disadvantage.
David is unfazed. “You’re living at his place. You moved in with him,” he reminds 5up, not unkindly. Hafu snickers at the outrage on his face. “You’re together.”
(Hafu offers some advice to a friend. She doesn’t regret it until she does.)

Fifty-one, fifty-two, fifty-three…
He traces his fingertip from freckle to freckle, like counting stars on an image of the night sky. Steve doesn’t mention it, though his muscles twitch whenever 5up brushes over a particularly sensitive spot. With his other arm, he tucks his thumb under the hem of 5up’s sweater to rub slow circles into the skin of his waist.
A contented sigh slips out of 5up’s lips. He smiles and kisses the underside of Steve’s jaw.
(The sun sets; 5up sleeps. Counting sheep is overrated, anyway.)

“What is it this time?”
“Oh, this little guy? He has a splinter,” Steven says dismissively. “When does your shift end?”
“Which paw?” 5up will not get distracted. He will not.
Steven sets Littlefoot down on the table with a shrug. “Dunno. Didn’t check. Is it the usual — Seven?”
(5up grows suspicious of a frequent client to his veterinary clinic. Really, how many things can possibly be wrong with one small dog?)

“I dunno what I’m gonna do when I run out of sparkling water.”
“Umm, order some more? I can bring some over if needed.”
Steve laughs.
“I have a clutch right now,” 5up explains. “Do you wanna go to—? Wait actually— Do you wanna do dinner today, Steve?”
“Dinner today? I’m playing VALORANT today.”
“Huh?”
“Well… Maybe, actually.”
(It’s a joke. Well— Steve thinks he’s joking. Maybe he isn’t though, because there’s a can of sparkling water on his doorstep and the bastard thing sure as hell didn’t knock on the door itself.)

Summary
Maybe it’s evolutionary. Steve is built for the sun, he thinks. His nose is adorned with freckles that grow darker with each passing day. His lips don’t crack. His palms don’t sweat. 5up, in contrast, feels the heat cloying in his lungs and hates it — thinking of England and Denmark as he tugs at the hem of his t-shirt. His arms are pale ivory. He prefers them covered up with sweater sleeves.
(5up moves to LA. He doesn’t expect to stay.)

“How does it feel to have one foot in the grave?” 5up questions, as though he can read Steve’s mind. Steve snorts.
“You tell me. I’d cremate my body my fuckin’ self sooner than I’d let it rot in the dirt.”
“You won’t have much of a choice if you’re already dead. It’s not like you could stop me,” 5up points out, shrugging.
“Stop you?” repeats Steve incredulously. “5up, I’m counting on you to make this happen. This is your official notice. Give it another thirty years then I want you to throw me in the fire.”
(It’s Steve’s birthday. Maybe there’s something to this whole gift giving business.)

Summary
Sometimes he catches Steve watching him mid-rant, a soft smile dancing across his lips. It stopped him in his tracks the first time. The second, he’d tried his best to soldier on through, only to immediately lose his train of thought. Steve had laughed then, warm and bright. 5up had shut him up with a flustered kiss.
They’re figuring it out. Slowly. Here and there, Steve might forget to reassure 5up that his insults are not always rooted in truth — 5up might become so absorbed in himself that he doesn’t give Steve the attention he needs. The important thing is they’re both committed to making it work.
(5up loves Steve more than he can articulate. He just wishes he would stop bringing up the fucking fish.)

Summary
“5up,” Steve says. His voice is unbearably soft. Something inside 5up rips and tears.
“Steve,” he responds, equally gentle.
“What the fuck are we doing, man?”
The wound wrenches wider. “I don’t know,” 5up whispers.
(Sometimes all love takes is two idiots, a blue moon, and some generous colour interpretation.)

He’d thought he’d known Steve’s face well enough until he was faced with the task of rebuilding it pixel by pixel.
(The consequence of 5up creating Steve in Elden Ring.)

Summary
“I miss you,” Steve mumbles through the phone, and his voice has that soft, honest quality that it always does when he’s like this. 5up’s heart clenches. It’s these moments that keep him from leaving like he should’ve done four months ago, these soft-spoken truths that time and time again have him believing that maybe, maybe this time will be different.
It never is.
(5up receives a phone call. He doesn’t know how it ended up like this.)
