Summary
The next thing he knows is pain. His tongue is thick in his mouth, and he can’t make a single sound. The pain is as bright and hot as fire. It engulfs him, from head to toe. The only reason why he knows that there aren’t any flames liking his skin, is that his eyes are still working as they should. He only sees bright whiteness. First, he thinks that he’s in heaven. This could be his salvation. Then, he panics, because that would mean that he left Jude in his manmade personal hell down on earth. He can’t leave him behind. Then he feels a warm hand on his own. It’s still too bright to make out who it is, but he knows. He would know this hand everywhere.

“What shall we do, then?” Boris asks, a smile on his face.
“Do we have to do something?” Theo asks. He smiles in return— more muted, uneasy.
The streets only get busier when the holidays close in. Tourists, visiting families, traveling businessmen. But the crush of bodies swarming the streets of New York doesn’t make Theo feel anonymous or invisible. There are only more people around to observe him, waiting for a slip.
“Of course,” Boris says. His smile inches further up his face, knocked crooked across his cheeks. “Would be a waste not to. Is our first Christmas back together again.”

He keeps thinking about it when he gets back to New York. Every time Kitsey tries to talk to him through increasingly strained smiles he thinks about it and his ears start burning, and he has to look away.
While Kitsey goes home and breaks the news to her mother, which Theo tries not to think about, he goes home and thinks about Boris instead. He tries not to think about Boris either, but those fragments, orange and blue, won’t leave him.
He takes pills for two, three, four days in a row, for the black and dreamless sleep they bring him.
And yet, he’s still he thinking about it three weeks later, when Boris shows up at the shop again.

Summary
Seeing him here, in New York, surrounded by the deep browns and golds of Hobart and Blackwell, is so alien to me I have to repress the urge to pinch myself like a child would after a dream. It looks incorrect, him standing here. Like someone has taken a pair of scissors to my memories of him, cut him out of his rightful place on the abandoned playground, and pasted him sloppily into a corner of my life where he doesn’t belong. Has it only been a few weeks? It feels like ages longer, like it’s been a decade, like we’re different people trying to see what exactly we liked about each other so much way back when.
But then he says it again- “Potter.”- and that feeling vanishes as quickly as it arrived.
“You came,” I say dumbly.
He gives a cheery smirk that I don’t believe. “Promised I would.”

Leo’s mouth runs off before he can stop it. “Just Gio? Like Cher?”
God, he thinks. That was stupid, Leo. Not the time or place, Leo. You’re in the prison dimension. You’re dying here and you can’t even cut the jokes now? Raph was so right about you.
But the imaginary turtle surprises him by smiling slightly, the corners of his mouth pulling just barely upwards in a way that somehow completely transforms him. Not the time or place for jokes or smiling at them but here they are. Like company.
Or: a long-lost brother takes the long way home.

But it was everyone else who was wrong. Raph was the only one who was living in reality.
“Leo. Isn’t. Dead.”
_________________It's been two years since Leo's disappearance. The city has erected a monument in Bryant Park to honor and mourn New York's bravest young hero.
While Leo's statue sits in the park, Raph sits in therapy. Everyone believes Raph is too traumatized, too wounded to process the loss of his brother.
But there's something Raph can't explain, something only he can feel, something everybody wants him to ignore. It whispers softly somewhere in the deepest corners of his mind: he's still here.
