"Steve was good," Bucky tells her, but even as he says it, it doesn't sound true.
Yelena can tell, too. "As good as he was in the Void?" she asks.
"That wasn't him." Bucky shakes his head and looks down at the sandwich clenched in his metal hand. He had nightmares again for weeks after that. "Steve was... he was my best friend. He was my family."
Yelena closes one eye and squints at him. “Family like the wife or family like the brother?”
Bucky makes a face and shoves her so hard she cackles and drops the pickle slice she was about to put in her mouth.

The Quinjet touched down, and Steve was stunned to see a lone figure standing at the edge of the tarmac—Sunlight glinted off a metal arm; long hair whipped in the mountain breeze; half his face hidden by a dark visor. The Winter Soldier, one of the “security personnel” Ardyn had sent to assist on the Chitauri crisis.
Natasha followed his gaze out the window. “Oh.”
“Pierce sent him?” Steve’s surprise was palpable. He’d assumed this soldier’s duties wouldn’t be such everyday tasks.
“Apparently.” Natasha placed her palm on her hip and sized up Steve. “Interested in him? I heard you started looking for him the moment Thor took Loki away. You even stopped checking in on Christine in Statistics.”
Steve sighed. “I never checked on Christine.”
“Exactly—there’s the problem. I know plenty of good girls, or boys—you just have to tell me your type.”
Steve arched an eyebrow. “My type? He held off an entire Chitauri phalanx outside Queens for two hours with just ten men. Then he wiped out almost a whole Chitauri squad by himself, saved thousands of lives. Hard not to be impressed. You know anyone else like that?”
