    The first shiver curled up her spine like fire, crawling through her muscles and making her knees buckle. Her lungs burned with every ragged breath, and a pressure rose behind her eyes so intense it felt like they might shatter. Bones creaked and shifted unnaturally. Her fingers were stretched into sharp claws, her ribs bent unnaturally and every tendon screamed in protest. Rumi collapsed onto the floor, her teeth gnashing as fur erupted along her arms and spine, prickling, itching, spreading in angry, hot waves.
    Faintly she registers that she is lying in some back alley, and not confined in the safety of the basement like usual. No chains to hold her down, no steel door to prevent her rampage. As panic flooded her whole body, she picked up the soft voices of her two closest friends slowly coming closer, before everything went black and her mind was overtaken by something else.

    And there she is, Yang, all sleep-mussed hair and worried eyes, alive alive alive.

    Blake throws herself into her arms. If Yang was a little less strong, they might both have fallen out of bed, but as it is, Yang steadies, and her arm wraps around Blake, holding her close. Blake presses her face into her shoulder and sobs, great racking gasps, for a minute or more. And as scared as she looked, Yang doesn't press for answers, doesn't make her explain. Just holds her, fierce and tight and close, until she can speak again.

    Or

    Blake's still haunted by the horrors of the past. But Yang is always there.
