Summary
“His shirt’s on inside out,” Josh commented to Linda. Eddie opened the door to the breakroom and tried to let it close behind him, but that did not deter either of his colleagues. “Is this a walk of shame?”
“Well, I am walking,” Eddie confirmed, rounding the counter and beelining to the empty coffee pot. “And full of shame.”
“What happened?”
“I stood him up,” he answered, shortly.
After what was probably a very involved silent conversation between Linda and Josh, Josh said, “Eddie, if you aren’t ready, I’m sure he’d understand.”
“I am ready,” he said, detaching the water reservoir with more force than necessary. “I didn’t do it on purpose.”

Summary
“My mom said, uh, that his name was Buck. That he was going to go to the fire academy and that he had a—” she broke off, rubbing her own forehead, exactly where his skin went pink. “She said he went by Firehose.”
Buck didn’t need all of his coworkers to look at him in alarm; he was pretty sure he’d gone deadly pale. His daughter knew four things about him, and one of them was his old tinder profile handle. He felt a little like he was going to die.
“She’s got your eyes,” Eddie commented, unhelpfully.
----
Buck finds out he has a daughter, and also a stupidly big crush on his best friend. It's an adjustment.

Summary
"Hey, sorry about that, I was just—Eddie?”
Eddie’s head shot up at the sight of Buck, frozen halfway towards his seat. “Buck?”
Buck let out an awkward chuckle and glanced around. “There must be a mix-up, I’ll go ask—”
“No!” Eddie practically yelled the word, and then he winced at the desperation in his own voice. Belatedly, he realized it was possible that people who were interested in men were supposed to be sitting there. But Buck was watching him with wide eyes, still paused leaning on his chair, so Eddie added, “I could use a six-minute break. You know, from finding out how many siblings every woman in this bar has.”
Buck’s eyes glinted in the dim bar lighting. He finally took the seat and asked, “oh, so you don’t care about how many siblings I have?”
——
Eddie and Buck finally go on a date. It just takes them three times to realize it.

Summary
He looked down, shocked to see Christopher’s number displayed across his screen. They had texted occasionally, but it had been over six years since they last saw each other, and since Christopher never called him, something was clearly wrong.
“Chris?”
“Hey Buck, I know it's been a while, and I’m sorry to be so blunt, but Dad was hurt in a fire six weeks ago and has been in a coma ever since.” The color drains from Buck’s face. “I begged them to let him fight, but they won’t listen. Grandma and Abuelo, they want to…”
He doesn’t let Christopher finish, “Christopher, is your dad dead?”
He braces himself for the answer. It may have been over six years, but deep down, Buck’s feelings for his former partner have never changed.
“No, because they aren’t in Dad’s power of attorney, you are.” Christopher tells him, “They tried to hide his will, but when they suggested pulling the plug, the hospital contacted the fire station that Dad works at, just to verify, and his captain turned it over. They couldn’t remove life support because they need you to sign off. I need you too…” Buck doesn’t even hear the last part as he’s sucked into his own thoughts.
