The last thing Ray remembers is going down. He lets go of Pete for a second after rubbing his thumb lovingly over the man's broad shoulder- the same goodbye he gave his mother before coming to the long walk. Pete smiles and walks with him for a minute longer before letting go and falling to his knees in the rain. He feels such a deep rooted relief, being off his feet. He could fucking cry, he doesn't realize through the rain that he is.

“But hey, we made it through the first of four.” He nudged Pete’s shoulder with his own. His touch was fire. “Maybe even made some friends along the way.”
The sentence transported Pete to the previous September, when Georgetown’s welcome week events were coming to a close and classes were about to start. They’d been sitting on the floor of Ray’s room, and Ray had been sprawled on the carpet, staring at the ceiling. "I don’t even care about the grades," he’d declared. "Not as much as I should anyway. All I really want is to have a friend. A *real* friend."
And Pete, who had known Ray a week at that point, who was already letting his gaze linger a little too long on Ray’s arms and lips and eyes, had patted Ray’s shin from where he sat cross-legged and told him, "You do."-
at the end of their freshman year of college, something in Pete cannot stand to push down his feelings any longer.
