She gathered the fabric of her kirtle in her hands. “Balinor,” she said, looking away. The side of her face that remained facing him was spotted with old, familiar scars, mottling her eyebrow into patches and making her right ear small with ruin. The skin was dragged like rivers over her cheekbone and jaw, a little pale and tough. Merlin loved her, loved this face, though he knew it disgusted the town. But, for the first time, Merlin reckoned he knew just how this had happened to her, just whose fire this was.
