Phil's entire life from now on was going to be filled with visions of some other, kinder, alternate universe where he’d come home from that adrenaline-fueled “I’m so glad you’re not dead” kiss with Clint in New Mexico, that tasted like sand and everything he’d ever wanted, and done it right. Done it like he’d been planning to do it: gotten a good full night of sleep, grabbed coffee for Clint on the way into work, carefully pulled him aside and said something smooth. There would have been dating, and at some point, kissing again. And Clint would have, uh, seen Phil’s bedroom. And Phil would have seen Clint’s. And… met his dog, because apparently now he had a dog? Phil had not planned for the dog.
Phil didn’t need to plan for the dog, because instead of doing all the above, Phil had come home, gone to bed, and woken up in the middle of the night with his dinner already halfway back up his throat and Clint had come over (with the dog) at exactly the wrong time and seen him like that.
And now he was never going to be able to face Clint again without making it weird.

Clint is always glad to see his brother Barney-- even when he's showing up unannounced at his door to berate him about ruining an op Clint didn't even know he was involved in. He just... don’t know how to be what Barney needs. How to keep him from leaving, over and over.
It's Phil-- Phil who has no living family at all and never did have any siblings-- who invites Barney in, Phil who feeds him millet bake, Phil who asks Clint if maybe, just maybe, Barney feels the same as Clint does. If maybe he actually does want to stay.
Honestly, Barney only showed up at his brother's door to find out what happened in Driftless-- and okay, maybe just a little because his brother has once again failed to tell him he's in a relationship and he'd like to meet the guy before the divorce this time. But that's not why he keeps coming back.

Summary
It's not that Phil Coulson isn't pleased with his promotion. Yes, he was taken away from Strike Team Delta, and yes he's out of the field now, and okay there are an awful lot of meetings. But he's working directly for the Director, doing work only only he can be trusted to do right.
If only there weren't so much of it, and it didn't involve so very many deeply stupid people.
And if only he weren't missing Clint (and Natasha) so much....

Summary
When a professor of archaeology at a midwestern university disappears while on a dig, the Director of SHIELD takes an unexpected interest. Now Agents Clint Barton and Phil Coulson are being sent to the city of Driftless to investigate. Undercover. As married students.
Clint quickly finds himself knee-deep in potsherds and surrounded by suspects-- and possibly even zombies-- while navigating his pseudo-relationship with Phil.
Phil, meanwhile, is having the time of his life. It's the perfect opportunity for him to finish his PhD dissertation and rid himself of his annoying preoccupation with Clint's ass. Or so he thinks.
But in Driftless, very little is exactly what it seems.

The stream is clogged with willowherb, fibrous spreading roots tangled into a thick blanket just beneath the water. Downstream, the small waterfalls are dry, the moss surrounding them unhappy, pale and crackly beneath his palm. So, it needs tending to.
