Voldemort is not quite dead. Harry is not quite alive.
Dumbledore is not so callous with Harry's upbringing.
Harry is not quite alive.

What if Evil!Manipulative!Dumbledore was played straight? What if he knew about Voldemort's accidental horcrux immediately, and (with some assistance) acted reasonably about it?

Summary
WIP HP fic loosely based on a prompt from the amazing White_Squirrel's Scribble Pad, "Ferte in Noctem Animam Meam", about interpreting the Evil!Manipulative!Dumbledore tropes rationally, and having Harry be treated as a child with a terminal illness.
The original reasoning for the prompt not being expanded into a full story was the lack of plot; the initial change doesn't particularly affect the story too much apart from Harry becoming even more reckless than in canon.

To celebrate a decade since my first fic on Ao3, I've decided I want to spend some time infodumping about worldbuilding decisions I've made in my fic, and HOW I make decisions like that.
I do a lot of research and thinking about things like letter-writing styles, transport, societal structures, culture, speculative creature biography, how magic works... and all these ideas come from somewhere! A LOT of briefly-mentioned things in my fic have more thought behind them than appears on screen, and research too. So where do I go looking when I'm building those ideas? What do I research, and what do I just make up?
Comment with your questions, and I'll post my answers as chapters in this work.

Summary
In short, this is a meta on souls and horcruxes in the Harry Potter series. It's written in the style of a casual academic work/essay. The introduction is found below:
The integrity of the soul is one of the cornerstones of the Harry Potter universe (henceforth HPU). Harry’s intact soul is able to resist total possession by Voldemort during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries; Voldemort’s fractured soul leads to his downfall. This work centers on the magic of Horcruxes as presented in the HPU. It necessarily delves into the nature of the soul, its integrity, and how the creation of the Horcrux destabilizes - but does not diminish - the integrity of the soul. That is, I propose a theory of the soul that cannot be reduced numerically, but rather an infinite soul, that, when divided through the creation of a Horcrux (or several, in the case of Lord Voldemort), becomes less stable but is not reduced in its capacity.
Put in simpler terms, why is Voldemort still 100% Voldemort, no matter where and how his soul is split? Moreover, why is his soul increasingly unstable without affecting his magical ability?

Sometimes, a person with a degree in costume design disagrees with the choices made by costume designers in a major film franchise. Sometimes that person is me. This work is a collection of designs and sketches of how I imagine witches and wizards to dress.
Or: wizards and witches wear robes, and gosh darn it, I have a lot of feelings on magical fashion design and garment construction.

Here, have a map! And an in-depth explanation to go with it.

Summary
Age isn't everything, but it could certainly help with the visual impact of a story when characters are cast correctly. Some people never read the novels and only base their opinions on the movies, and the casting - however wonderful, fantastic, and awesome the actors - can skew the impact of the characters' stories.
