Dr John Shen, who always carried around an iced coffee from Dunkin’, who was calm and relaxed in the most extreme situations, who soothed patients’ worries with only his words, and who was unfairly handsome. He had introduced himself to Dennis on his first day of night shift with a honeyed voice, a small smile on his face and the reassurance that it really was okay to call him John, not Dr Shen. ‘None of that formality nonsense, we are all equals here in the Pitt.’ And that was that.

Dr Dennis Whitaker had been on night shift for two weeks, and the crush he harboured for his attending was only getting worse. It was already pretty late, so the streets were quiet. Max enjoyed the peacefulness, but on the last stretch that led to the hotel, he suddenly had the overwhelming urge to turn back.
Charles was a few meters behind him, in a mid-brisk walk. Max stopped and waited for him to catch up. He fell into step next to Max, but didn’t say anything.
Neither of them mentioned how Charles so readily put himself in between Daniel’s fist and Max’s face.
But Max didn’t think he could bring himself to thank Charles, so he didn’t.
Charles was a floor above Max again, so Max got off the elevator first. He was a few steps into the hallway when Charles finally spoke, in a voice so soft that it was almost like he didn’t really want Max to hear it.
“Don’t worry about it.”
Baku sure was a strange place for Max.
