"I got you this," she says, sliding the mini apple pie onto the table. "Because you ate the whole plate and you deserve it."
Jack shakes his head. Emily tugs at the edge of the china, her finger tracing the curve.
"No dessert?" she asks, and she knows the answer before he even looks up.
"I want my mom."
Makes sense. Emily can't even remember if she ever saw Jack not latched onto Haley's hand, glued to her side. But now, right now, Jack's a singular thing.
"You want your mom," Emily repeats, not a question.
There's his aunt Jess near the door, giving a polite goodbye to a trio of strangers. But she can't see his mom.
She nods, then. "Okay. We'll find your mom."

"Oh. That's nice of her. Morgan gave me a ride. He's in the parking lot now, I'm sure he'll be inside in a minute. Hey isn't that his sweatshirt?" He can't believe he just blurted that out, he hadn't meant to. Lucky for him, Hotch never has to answer.

The smell of home and Emily’s shampoo, two things that have gone hand in hand for years, is replaced by the smell of sweat and blood. His scars ache, his skin pulling and burning like they are new again. He feels the sticky warmth of blood he knows isn’t real, but he tries to stop it anyway, his hands pressed against scars that had healed years ago.
