“I made a mistake,” Magnus started, his body thrumming with a nervous energy that was unfamiliar to him. “Did you think I was Jace?” Alec looked up at him through his lashes. Magnus winced. Straight to the point. Cutthroat.“Yes,” He answered truthfully, discomfort lining his exhale of smoke. “Not the first time. You’re not the first ex to try to get revenge…” Alec shrugged, patting down the sleeve of his sweater for a few moments before lifting his gaze at the cat that had made its way to the top of the trash cans instead. “But, you are the first male friend? Of an ex to get revenge by mistake.” He finished, his fingers twitching as though he wanted to bury his hands into the cat’s fur.

It was his usual style, but something felt different. Distant, maybe, in a way that it hadn’t been before, even when the Institute was in crisis and Alec had few moments to spare.
