Summary
Eddie swallows, then says a quiet “Thank you,” not looking Steve in the eye. His cheeks are tinged pink and it’s the first thing he’s said in at least half an hour.
“Of course baby,” Steve says without thinking. He swallows. He’s being weird, definitely. But the thing is, he means it. He finds Eddie’s eye. “I said I would take care of you and I plan to.”
Eddie's cheeks flush even deeper, and Steve tries to keep the smugness out of his smile. For Eddie’s sake, of course.

Eddie dies, and then he wakes up. Things get complicated after that, but Steve takes care of him. -

Steve swallows and tries to focus on the road, but his voice twists into bitterness despite himself. “I just spent two days hiding underneath my mother’s sofa,” he says. “but I figured Dustin deserved better than that.”

Eddie glances between Steve and his mountain of blankets. One of the alpha’s hoodies in mixed in there, the fading, soft one that Steve was constantly borrowing.
Brushing a hand across the blankets, Steve adjusts them again, fixing them where Eddie had moved them.
Realization dawns on Eddie’s face. “Sweetheart, you’re nesting.”
“Huh?”
“You’re in pre-heat.”
“No, I’m…I’m sick.” Steve’s eyebrows furrow, and he fists a hand in Eddie’s hoody squished up against his thigh.

It's Steve's first time in pre-heat, and he's miserable.
Luckily, Eddie's there to take care of him.
