As another wave of powerful magic pours off the pendant, Pink is knocked clean over from the blistering shape of it around her. Her palms hit the dying land’s earth, and she is enveloped on all sides by broiling, grueling, weighty heat. It’s dry and white-hot, like the world itself is ablaze—the horizon turns liquid where the Samurai and Magistrate wobble and blur. Every part of her shaking, Pink tries to crawl forward, but her stomach drags across the dusty ground and her arms give way. Powerless to draw her sword from her hip, powerless to even stand, she feels the ignited atmosphere come down upon her with the pressure of a thousand cinderblocks.

Desperate to raise her head, Pink looks out one last time toward the horizon, where Steel is lying in a crumpled heap, one hand still white-knuckle on the splayed-out Samurai Spear.

But then he sees it: a flicker of light, the glare catching on the lens of his goggles. It flashes orange and yellow before fizzling out - it sparks something inside him, and hope bubbles up as his eyes snap to the source of the flare. Dell dashes towards it with only an itch of a reason, a human impulse and desire for just someone else as he stumbles out into the clearing.
Moonlight floods his senses as he reaches his better judgement - his desperation had bested him, and now he'd exposed himself for all to see. The limelight blinded him, and he was left exposed like a doe in headlights - helpless to the force that moved up behind him, and the bat that was seconds away from colliding with his skull.

Most of what I had was just theory: Sniper was homosexual, or at least attracted to men in a substantial way. And while I said I didn’t care, I was a bit perturbed to find I did care, or at the very least I kept thinking about it. I really hadn’t been lying when I said I didn’t have a problem with it, certainly; men get lonely out on the oil fields same as anywhere else, away from their homes and families and one errant spark away from a closed-casket funeral. And if it became more than convenient companionship to some of them, well, I reckon that was their business, and not mine, and there aren’t enough good things in this world to go around labeling things “unnatural”. Still, when it came to Sniper, my mind kept worrying at the information, like some new equation that I knew meant something, needed to be used somewhere important, but couldn’t completely figure out just yet.
